Ames first grade students get new books thanks to Greater Iowa grant

    November 15, 2011

Greater Iowa recently presented a $1,000 check to Darla Emery, Christy Franco and Shena Jackson, first grade teachers ant Fellows Elementary in Ames.

The grant money will be used to purchase new books for all of the school’s first grade students, who are developing early reading skills.

“Because of Greater Iowa’s generosity, we can buy motivating, interesting books for our beginning readers,” said Darla Emery. “These books not only open the world of reading to our children. They will help to build the confidence necessary to become independent readers now and for years to come. This much-needed gift comes at a time of tight budgets so it is doubly appreciated.”

ProjectClassroom is a special grant program for K-5 teachers to purchase items they may not otherwise be able to afford. Nominations were accepted between June and September 1, and consisted of an essay of no more than 500 words. The five winners were chosen by special selection committees from each of Greater Iowa’s branch communities. Nominations were accepted from teachers, parents and any other member of the community.
